Member Directory
The Directory is produced in February of each year. It lists all SSAC members, and includes local artists, musicians, organizations, businesses and art supporters. Photos are included with a majority of the entries. The 2009 cover was designed by Megan Newcombe. Special thanks go to Rosemary Colley for proofing the 2009 directory. 1,000 copies were printed and distributed to members, organizations and local libraries.
Artistic Opportunities
In fulfilling our vision of Arts for All, SSAC has also been able to be an advocate for our local artists. Every effort was made to hire artists who were current, paid, members of the Arts Council. Opportunities for members to advertise is made on the website under “Artistic Adventures.”
In 2009, the SSAC spent over $12,000 to hire artists to teach, jury, adjudicate, perform and present at our many events and workshops. Over $6,000 of this amount was spent on local artists for the following initiatives: Speakers Corner, DAREarts, Music Festival, Music on Main, Art on Main, Youth Arts by the River, Storytelling, Artists in Seniors homes, Artists with CLASS, Choral Workshop, Dance Workshops, and Summer Arts Camps.
Arts and Culture Guide
In 2009/2010, the Arts and Culture Guide was a collaborative effort of the Dufferin Arts Council, Dufferin County Museum and the South Simcoe Arts Council. Artists, artisans and arts groups in Dufferin County, South Simcoe and Caledon areas were invited to place a listing in the guide. It was well received and widely distributed (over 35 000 copies to a large portion of Simcoe, Dufferin Counties and the GTA). Jim Lorriman and Arnold de Graffe voluntarily produce the guide which showcases the talent to be found locally and attracts visitors to our region.
Bradford West Gwillimbury Studio Tour
The first annual Bradford West Gwillimbury Studio Tour saw 23 artists located at 13 sites showcase their art in their community. The perimeter of the tour extended from the 6th line Bradford to just north of the 12th line and West from Dissette Street to just East of Highway 27. Art included painting, woodturning, pottery, photography, jewellery, painting on wearable fabric, recycled fabric design, stone etching, and one-of-a-kind furniture made from recycled wood products. Over 350 people attended this studio tour.
Local town council, sponsors and media were enthusiastic and supportive in both monetary and volunteer capacities to ensure a successful event. Visitors enjoyed touring the sites and made “a day of it” visiting the artists and making purchases as well as enjoying local eateries as they went from artist to artist on the route. Guests were met who came from as far as Northern Ireland, Australia and closer to home Ottawa and Windsor.
The SSAC performed the role of treasurer, advisor and offered informational support, as well as assisting in the distribution of advertising throughout their territory for the studio tour. SSAC representatives attended meetings with the town and supported the presentation to Town Council for financial and nominal support for the tour. The exposure of SSAC in Bradford West Gwillimbury highlighted the profile of our organization in the community and made politicians as well as artists aware of the role of SSAC.
Special thanks go to Stella Wadsworth and Maureen Joyce, who volunteered many, many hours of their time organizing this event.
Potato Festival Road Art
This collaborative event, hosted by Millpond Centre, PaperMoon/Lloyd’s Gallery and the SSAC, was held during Alliston’s Potato Festival weekend. Over 15 young artists created masterpieces with chalk on Victoria Street in Alliston.
Fortunately, the weather co-operated this year (it rained last year) and the public was able to view the pictures over the Festival weekend. A $1.00 donation enabled people to vote for their favourite artwork. $200 was collected and donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Many thanks to Elsa and Irv Broder, who coordinate this initiative.
